BULBUS di BAMBU: The Bulb
For some fifteen years, I have incorporated the sphere as a chief component in my sculptural concepts. Its role is that of a Genesis metaphor. The sphere serves me in establishing an entity representing the forces that ushered in the Universe. In my earlier works I incorporated the sphere in a space conductive to its own shaping, and in most instances the form was a half cylinder. These cylinders became corridors of archetype through which the spheres moved. Having completed the Homage to Bamboo, and by incorporating hollow spherical containers from which the bamboo emerged, I set about in my mind to identify the twine sphere as a seed from which life would germinate. I use the spherical shell generated by twine to serve as a womb, a nest, in order to give it more prominence, I elevated the bulb by placing it on a bamboo platform. Instead of the bamboo growing from this hollow shell, it now presents it and protects it as a point of its origin. Its form is generated though the wrapping of twine. The bulb represents the connective process through which bamboo can explore its infinite architectural shaping. A flower comes from its bulb. This sculpture is to celebrate the bulb.
